McCusker learns from the best
BOTHWELL fiddler John McCusker admits he's learned as much going on tour with Mark Knopfler than he has done in the rest of his career.
John has just finished playing 65 dates with the former Dire Straits frontman, which took in 18 European countries.
He said: "Last year I did all 90 dates with Mark but since I've just become a dad I felt going to North America would be awful long stretch to be away from home.
"There is nothing like a baby to stop everything, but at the same time it's one of those opportunities that you can't say no to. I've learned more playing with Mark than I have done over the rest of my career."
Having just left Knopfler's side, he has already played at the Edinburgh Festival and with regular collaborators Orcadian singer/songwriter Kris Drever and Idlewild frontman Roddy Woomble.
He is now spending this month and next clocking up the miles with girlfriend Heidi Talbot performing over 20 gigs across the UK to promote her new album.
He rejoins Drever and Woomble for eight shows before Capercaillie founder Donald Shaw replaces Woomble for another four and then it's off to the traditional Phil Cunningham's Christmas concerts for two night's at the Queen's Hall in Edinburgh.
John said: "Heidi has a new album out in October so it will be nice for her to get out and perform after being stuck at home playing mum for a few months."
