Motherwell disco project up for award
AN INNOVATIVE disco which brings teenagers in the Motherwell area together and creates awareness of the issues affecting them has resulted in two youth workers being shortlisted for a prestigious Youthlink Scotland award.
Gillian McCairn and Marita Dominici from North Lanarkshire Council's community learning and development team are in the running for the 'Innovator of the Year' at the Youthlink Scotland awards at Glasgow's Crowne Plaza hotel — thanks to the partnership they created with the town's Mega Bar.
Aside from hosting regular discos at the Mega bar, the Times & Speaker reported last August that a 'How to Look Good Fully Clothed' event was held at the venue.
It came about after the youth workers asked teenagers what event they would like to be involved in — and the majority of them made a fashion show their top choice.
The event, however, was not all about fashion as it also aimed to tackle wider problems such as self-esteem issues – and it was through organising these intiatives that the team has been nominated.
Youth worker Gillian said: "Young people will come to us and tell us what they want to do which is why the initiative works so well."
Gillian also explained that youth workers in the area are hoping to form a committee which young people will be part of and their role will be to determine the projects that take place in the coming months.
