Mary goes solo with Bellshill show

A LANARKSHIRE artist is holding her first solo exhibition at Bellshill Cultural Centre.
Art school graduate Mary Fehilly picked up her brushes for the first time since childhood eight years ago following the death of her mother.
She said: “I hadn’t painted since I was at school, but my mother had just taken up painting before she died so after wondering what to do with all her stuff, I decided to try it myself.
“When I started my pictures were two inches square if they were lucky, and then a friend told me about the art class in the Charlotte Toal Centre, Coatbridge.
“I was really starting to enjoy painting, so I decided to go along. At first everyone’s paintings looked so wonderful that I was a bit overawed, but gradually I got better.”
Despite living far from the coast, in Coatbridge, Mary has a real affinity with water, which can be seen in much of her work.
She said: “I started in watercolours and I tend to do a lot of watery things and also use acrylics and pastels which I think I have become quite proficient in.
“I love doing it and other people seem to like it too.”
Mary has since travelled from Rothesay to Rome in search of inspiration, which can be seen in the display at the Cultural Centre until Monday, March 12.
She said: “It’s my first solo exhibition. I have exhibited before with a group of women called ‘Arty Folk’ all over Lanarkshire, but now I’m breaking out on my own so we’ll see how it goes.”
