STRATHCLYDE'S Road Policing Unit from Motherwell held a day of action across North Lanarkshire on Friday, June 20 in a bid to target irresponsible drivers.

With a particular emphasis on school runs and surrounding residential areas officers were out in force to ensure road safety legislation was being complied with.

Nine motorists across the division received a fine of £30 for failing to wear a seatbelt, whilst eight drivers received three points on their licence and a fine of £60 for speeding offences.

Superintendent David Leitch said: "The day of action was part of our ongoing campaign focusing on irresponsible driving and targeting those who choose to ignore road safety legislation.

"We will therefore continue to drive home the message that motorists have a responsibility to themselves, their passengers, other road users and pedestrians to heed our warnings about cutting speed and wearing a seatbelt.

"Drivers need to be aware that as we go into the school holidays, there tends to be an increase in the number of children out playing in residential areas.

"I would therefore urge all motorists to slow down, be responsible and make sure all those travelling in your car are wearing a seatbelt."

Seatbelt legislation has been in force for over 25 years yet the eight forces across Scotland taking part in the day of action stopped 415 drivers and 42 front seat passengers for not wearing their seatbelt, as well as detecting 173 drivers for speeding.
