NHS Lanarkshire have made it easier for local people to access its Stop Smoking service with a new fast-track phone number to a one-stop shop.
Anyone thinking of quitting should call 08452 17 77 07 or text "Advice" to 81066.
Motherwell defender Mark Reynolds helped launch the new phone number at Fir Park.
He said: "It's great that all this support is available for people who want t
o quit. So phone that number today, join a local stop-smoking group, stick with it, help and encourage each other and, together, you'll kick the habit."
Assistant health promotion manager Elspeth Russell said: "Giving up smoking is giving up and addiction, and we know it's hard.
"But research shows smokers have the best chance of quitting if they get together in a group where everyone helps and motivates each other.
"So if you've tried before to stop, now it's time to try again.
"Our one-stop shop is led by specialist nurses. You can refer yourself and join a local group straight away. It's free. You don't need to go through your GP. You can attend any group that's convenient for you wherever you live or work.
"So if you want to quit smoking, we can help you. And all you have to do is make a phone call or send a text. It works!"
Dr Gregor Smith who specialises in lung and respiratory problems is delighted people can now access the one-stop service.
He said: "A quarter of all deaths in Lanarkshire are attributed to smoking. It's a dreadful waste of life.
"Every cigarette is doing you damage. It's not just a risk - it's a certainty that smoking will damage your health.
"We know 70 per cent of Lanarkshire smokers want to stop smoking, and quitting is the single biggest step anyone can take to improve their health. But now that we have nurse-led services out in the Lanarkshire community, they will make that step much easier for you."
