NEW parking restrictions have been proposed for Bellshill town centre in an bid to crack down on drivers who leave their cars there all day.
Since the creation of new parking bays along the town's Main Street there has been growing concern at the number of drivers who park their vehicles there in the mornings and don't return to them until the evenings.
But now North Lanarkshire Coun
cil is proposing to limit parking to periods of one hour.
The proposals were outlined in a consultation letter sent to businesses in the town centre by Graham MacKay, the council's head of roads and transportation.
There are also plans to increase the number of designated taxi ranks in the town centre to three and provide a bus stop outside the former NHS clinic.
In his letter Mr MacKay admitted it had been difficult to come up with proposals which suited everyone.
He said: "Accommodating the needs of all road user groups and ensuring opportunity is provided for parking, loading, bus stops etc has been a challenging task.
"However I feel the proposals indicated achieve the required balance between the conflicting needs within the town centre."
The proposals have also been discussed by the Bellshill and District Local Area Partnership.
Convener Richard Lyle said: "We have to do something about the number of people who are parking inconsiderately by leaving cars in the Main Street from morning to night."
