POLICE searched along the River Clyde for a body following the attempted theft of high voltage electrical distribution cable at the Clyde Bridge on the A723 between Motherwell and Hamilton.

The force helicopter was called into action following the incident around 2.30pm on Friday (March 5).

Officers believe the culprit would have suffered at least serious burns, and have checked at local hospitals for anyone admitted with such injuries but drawn a blank.

The water was checked over the weekend amid fears the suspect could have been killed after receiving an electric shock and fallen in, but nothing was found.

A large amount of damage was caused, which may require several weeks of work to repair and could disrupt traffic between Motherwell and Hamilton.

A Scottish Power spokesperson said: "These people don't realise they are putting their lives - and others - at risk."
