Town centre regeneration set for the axe

MULTI-million pound plans to upgrade Motherwell town centre are doomed because they cost too much.

The grim forecast came from a consultant who warned Motherwell needs a new action plan as the current proposals cannot be afforded in the recession.

Among the proposals set for the axe are the reconfiguration of the town centre ring road, which is expected to cost tens of millions, £20 million of improvements at Motherwell railway station and the £125 million Park Street masterplan to develop new residential or commercial properties.

Motherwell Community Forum wish to initiate an "Imagine Motherwell" masterplan and framework document to present a comprehensive redevelopment strategy.
