Africa calls for Bellshill mum and daughter
A BELLSHILL mother and daughter are teaming up for the trip of lifetime when they head for Africa to carry out voluntary work.
Lauren Elliott (21) and mum Lynn (44) will spend four weeks in the Tanzanian village of Moshi, working for the charity Cross Cultural Solutions.
Lynn, a nurse, is hoping to work in the village's medical/HIV clinic while former Bellshill Academy pupil Lauren, now in the final year studying geography at Strathclyde University, hopes to work in an orphanage.
Lauren said: "Mum has said she wanted to do this for years and as I'm due to finish university this year we thought this would be the ideal time to do it.
"The charity recruits through my university and we decided to go for it. It's something we'll probably never have the chance to do again so we're really looking forward to it."
Before they can go on the trip, which takes place in August, Lauren and Lynn have to raise around 5,000 between them.
Lauren added: "We have already had a few fundraising events. The first was bag packing in Morrisons in Bellshill which raised around 1,000.
"We also raised about 1,200 from a ladies' night at General Motors Club in Holytown. My grandad, James Gilbert, did a sponsored head shave and beard growth for four weeks and he raised around 450, and we will be having further events in the next few months."
