Bellshill park and ride plans brought forward

PLANS to build a new park and ride facility near Bellshill station were given a boost this week after Strathclyde Partnership for Transport revealed the time scale for the project was being brought forward.

The proposal to build the new 550,000 facility, accommodating 100 to 150 vehicles, on an open space site at Hamilton Road was part of a capital programme package which was approved at a meeting of the SPT last week.

Members were told that the Bellshill project was one of three schemes which had been accelerated because of savings made through partnership working with local councils.

It's also hoped the new park and ride, which will be built on land at the site formerly occupied by the British Legion, will ease parking pressure in Bellshill town centre by freeing up spaces currently used by commuters for shoppers.

SPT say while a start date for the work at Bellshill had not yet been decided, draft designs were being finalised and site investigations carried out and an application for planning permission was being prepared.
