Council cuts could harm street fair funding

THE annual Bellshill Street Fair could be under threat as North Lanarkshire Council looks to save millions in community grants.

Organiser and Bellshill Community Council secretary Duncan McLeod applies to the council every year for a grant to run the three day event.

The grant is normally worth up to 1,000 or about half of the cost, with the community council making up the rest of the funding mostly from a generous donation they receive from M&D's Theme Park.

However, with the council looking to make efficiency savings of 55 million over the next two years they are to review payments to external agencies, subscriptions and general grants to reduce current expenditure by 20 per cent or the equivalent of around 2 million.

Mr McLeod said: "We could't run the street fair without the grant, but if the council are trying to save 2 million then it won't just be us that would be affected and I suspect many other organisations could fold."

Bellshill councillor Richard Lyle, chairman of the Local Area Partnership, is determined the street fair will continue.

He said: "As far as I'm concerned the street fair will continue and I'll be working with Bellshill Community Council to ensure they continue to receive funding for it."
