D-Day for tower
Glencairn Tower will be demolished in November
ONE of Motherwell’s best-known landmarks, Glencairn Tower, will disappear from the skyline next month as councillors hit out at the rising costs of the demolition.
Following a botched survey which failed to identify most of the asbestos contained within the 1964-built structure, the cost of the project has risen by over 50 per cent adding over £380,000 to the original £703,400 contract awarded to Technical Demolition Services Ltd (TDS).
North Lanarkshire Council design manager Jim Orr said: “The survey missed a bit of asbestos in pretty much every flat and this is the reason the costs have gone up from the original tender but we are still well within the £2 million estimate for the project.”
However, this failed to sit well with Thorniewood councillor Bob Burrows.
He said: “We awarded a contract at a good price and we have been hit with an increase in costs.
“This keeps happening and the talk that it is still within the £2 million estimate doesn’t wash any more.”
In addition another £87,400 has been charged by Scottish Power to re-route a power cable as the demolition of the tower will mean the loss of a substation.
This upset Motherwell South East and Ravenscraig councillor Alan Valentine.
He said: “It was Scottish Power themselves who decided to link up other buildings into the Glencairn Tower substation so while I understand it is our decision to remove it, they shouldn’t be charging us.”
The demolition will take place at noon on Sunday, November 20, and will majke way for a development of affordable housing.
