Disabled man's fury at muggers
A DISABLED Bellshill man was attacked and robbed as he walked his dog on Sunday (July 25) afternoon.
Robert Denholm (52), who walks with a stick due to arthritis down the left side of his body, had let his collie-cross Homer off the leash as they walked along a lane off Hattonrigg Road, near New Brandon Park.
He was passed by two men in their 20s, one of whom was carrying a golf club.
After he passed them Robert felt a blow to the back of his neck and was knocked to the ground before one of the men, wearing a red tracksuit, struck him on the stomach with the golf club.
The other, wearing a black tracksuit, brandished a knife and demanded money.
The attackers took his iPod along with Robert's mobile phone, wallet and a pair of sunglasses before making off to Hattonrigg Road in the direction of Main Street.
Robert was left with severe bruising to his shoulders and neck and pain in his stomach which already gives him problems as he has had part of his bowel removed because of Crohn's Disease.
He said: "I feel angry that they do that to a complete stranger. Your pride does take a bit of a beating as well."
The robbery happened about 12.20pm. The suspects were about 6' and 5'7" respectively. The man in the black tracksuit had a zigzag design shaved on his hair.
Detective Sergeant Paul Harvey, who is leading the enquiry, said: "This was very serious and could have had much worse consequences.
"The man was savagely attacked by callous individuals who had no regard for the man with a walking stick."
Anyone with information should call Bellshill Police Office on 202400 or Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
