Education minister sees how extra cash is used at college

THE Education Secretary visited Motherwell College to see first hand how the extra Scottish Government funding is being used.

During his visit, Michael Russell met six HND engineering students who are among the extra students accepted to study at Motherwell College after the Scottish Government provided almost 1 million in additional funds to the institution.

Mr Russell said: "It is hugely encouraging to meet the people who have directly benefited from the additional funds given to colleges — the students.

"The college has channelled the extra money directly to the funding of new student places. It is exactly the right thing to do in the current climate."

Hugh Logan, principal and chief executive of Motherwell College, added: "The college is already internationally recognised as a centre of excellence when it comes to engineering design. We are pleased we are able to give more students the exposure to the advanced technology we have."
