Firefighters urge residents to arrange home safety visits
FIREFIGHTERS in Motherwell and Bellshill are urging more residents to book home fire safety visits.
The move came as Motherwell fire station hosted a media day in a bid to become more accessible to the community.
As well as giving talks and demonstrations, teams from both towns expressed the need for more residents to take advantage of a visit or have a smoke detector fitted free of charge.
They also appealed for help in driving down the number of hoax calls and attacks on crews.
Firefighters from the two stations attended a total of nearly 3,000 call-outs in the past year with over 1,300 proving to be false alarms.
The teams are keen for the number of incidents throughout the areas to drop, and believe a key to this is through the free home fire safety visits service and the installation of smoke detectors.
Over the past year, firefighters at Motherwell and Bellshill carried out over 500 visits and fitted over 450 detectors.
They are hoping to reach out to the most vulnerable members of the community and the elderly in particular and urged local residents to get in touch.
As well as the community appeal, the event also featured a mock rescue mission following a simulated traffic collision as firefighters demonstrated how they would rescue an injured driver from a car.
For more information on home fire safety visits or to request a smoke alarm, call Motherwell fire station on 01698 262222 or Bellshill on 01698 745959.
