Former councillor to be honoured

THE gap site leading from Bellshill Main Street to the Morrisons store is to be upgraded and renamed in honour of a former councillor who served the town in the 1940s and 1950s.

The move to name the site in memory of Labour Party stalwart James Dempsey was proposed by SNP councillor and Bellshill Local Area Partnership convener Richard Lyle at a meeting of the partnership last week.

James Dempsey served for 14 years as councillor for the Bellshill South ward of the former Lanark County Council and was widely regarded as having been the driving force behind the building of the Orbiston estate in the 1950s.

He was elected councillor in 1945 and served until 1959 when he moved to Parliament as the MP for Coatbridge and Airdrie.

James's son, businessman Brian Dempsey, said: "It is very gratifying to see that his name and his hard work will be remembered in this way and we are very grateful to the councillors and appreciate their thoughtfulness."
