Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire retires

A CIVIC function has been held to mark the retiral of the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire, Gilbert Cox.

Colleagues, family and friends joined Gilbert for the event, which was hosted by North Lanarkshire Provost Tom Curley at Summerlee Heritage Park in Coatbridge.

As the Queen's representative in the county, Gilbert has played a major role in promoting Lanarkshire, including helping to secure the International Children's Games for 2011.

He said: "I have thoroughly enjoyed my role as the Lord Lieutenant of Lanarkshire and have had the pleasure of being involved in many unforgettable community events and meeting many fantastic people during my commission.

Gilbert has been Lord Lieutenant for the last 10 years, having previously been Deputy Lieutenant since 1989 and has twice been recognised in the Queens Honours list.

Provost Curley said: "We have been together in an official capacity on many occasions and his pride in Lanarkshire and care for the local people has been clear for all to see."
