MSP John Pentland (centre) receives the petition from (l-r) Motherwell and Wishaw Constituency Labour Party chairman Gary O'Rorke and councillors Tom Lunny, Paul Kelly and Michael Ross.

ORGANISERS of a petition against the feared closed of Airbles Station presented hundreds of signatures to Motherwell and Wishaw MSP John Pentland last week.

Mr Pentland has promised to take the petition to the Scottish Parliament and present it to Transport Minister Keith Brown in person.

Mr Brown has said there are no plans to cut the number of stations as part of Transport Scotland’s Rail 2014 consultation, but has failed to rule out relocations.

The petition was launched by Motherwell and Wishaw Constituency Labour Party last month.

Chairman Gary O’Rorke said: “Mr Brown has indicated he has no plans to close to close Airbles Station, but that is not quite the same as giving a definitive no.

“Why is it Motherwell might have to suffer from this review especially when Airbles is unmanned with near negligible operating costs?”

Mr Pentland hopes Mr Brown will now make a definitive statement on the future of the station.

He said: “I hope that Keith Brown takes these signatures into consideration and states clearly that Airbles is safe which he has so far failed to do.”
