Motherwell soldier shot in Afghanistan

A MOTHERWELL soldier might never walk again after being shot while serving in Afghanistan.

Private Stuart Collins (19) of the 1st Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland is a former Braidhurst High School pupil. He was on sentry duty when he was blindsided by enemy fire.

Stuart, a keen boxer and cage fighter, passed out from his training at Harrogate, Yorkshire, just 18 months ago and was on a six-month tour of Afghanistan with Bravo Company.

His patrol were attacked at a compound near Forward Operating Base Wishtan, near Sangin in Helmand Province, on February 23.

Stuart had just taken his post when he heard a burst of automatic fire. He felt a sharp pain in his upper body and immediately felt dizzy and fell to the ground.

Within 24 hours Stuart was on his way back to the UK and on to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham where he stayed for two weeks before being transferred to the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow where he is currently receiving treatment.

The gunshot left Stuart with a broken collar bone, three broken vertebrae in his spine, a collapsed lung and a substantial loss of blood.

Since his return to Scotland doctors have identified more problems and given the heartbreaking news to Stuart and his family that he will be paralysed from the chest down and will probably never walk again.
