Muir Street to close for 16 months
MUIR STREET in Motherwell is set to be closed for four months longer than anticipated to allow environmental improvements to be carried out.
In last week’s Motherwell Times it was suggested the closure from the junction of Hamilton Road with High Road to the train station could last a whole year.
However, after North Lanarkshire Council awarded the £1.2 million project to Maclay Civil Engineering Ltd at Tuesday’s meeting of the environmental services committee it was revealed the road will be closed from Wednesday next week (February 1) to May 29 2013, nearly 16 months in total.
This will mean that drivers will be forced to use the ring road around West Hamilton Street, Menteith Road and Hope Street to get around the closure.
This is the third phase of environmental improvements in the town centre which as well as installing new paving, street furniture, tree planting and public art will also see the removal of the double kerb to reduce the road to a single lane with the formation of on-street bays for parking and loading.

Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at 12:05 PMThe first phase of the Town Centre is hundreds of thousands over budget and the Council have still not finalised the final cost. Given the latest tender figure of £1.2m for this current phase, over a year long contract programme, that's not right. £23k per week for a job of this nature? Hmmmmmm.......
