Remembering the campaign to save Caterpillar - 25 years on

A SPECIAL event will be held next week to mark the 25th anniversary of an Uddingston factory workforce’s struggle to save their jobs which captured international headlines.
A quarter of a century ago Lanarkshire was shocked by the decision to close the Caterpillar factory in Uddingston, throwing hundreds of workers on the scrapheap.
Such decisions were a regular occurrence in the 1980s in Scotland whose economy was shaken time after time by announcements of closures and job losses as the country’s manufacturing industry was decimated.
But the Caterpillar closure is remembered because the workers at the plant decided not to simply accept the decision of the US owned multi-national company - instead they decided to occupy the factory in an attempt to emulate the heroes of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders in the 1970s.
A public meeting to mark the anniversary will be heldin Blantyre Miners Welfare, Calder Street, next Wednesday at 7pm.
