Rivals make pitches for Holyrood selection

TWO North Lanarkshire councillors have made pitches as they bid to replace Jack McConnell as MSP in Motherwell and Wishaw.

The Times reported last week that Mr McConnell is to stand down at the next Scottish Parliament elections in May.

Motherwell West councillor Michael Ross and Wishaw counterpart John Pentland are set to go head to head to become the Labour candidate for the seat having been representatives on North Lanarkshire Council since its creation in 1996.

Mr Ross is convener of North Lanarkshire Council's Motherwell area committee and also acts as the council's business manager.

He said: "I bring enthusiasm and commitment to everything I do and if selected and elected I will fight for the people of Motherwell and Wishaw in Edinburgh to secure for them the prosperity they and their families need."

Mr Pentland is the council's finance convener and is personal assistant to constituency MP Frank Roy.

He said: "I believe that with my experience I would be a strong Labour voice for Motherwell and Wishaw and know what must be done in our forthcoming campaign.

"As a local MSP I would continue to work hard and with true commitment towards the fulfilment of this vision."
