Talks underway to save 200 jobs at Newhouse drugs plant

POLITICIANS have started talks with representatives of a closure-threatened Newhouse drugs plant as over 200 jobs hang in the balance.

The Times & Speaker previosuly reported that American company Merck, known in the UK as MSD (Merck Sharp and Dohme), plans to 'phase out' operations at the facility as part of a global restructuring programme.

Finance Secretary John Swinney met with senior managers as news broke of the proposals.

He said: "The Scottish Government will work with MSD to develop options with a view to trying to secure an alternaive sustainable future for the site and its highly skilled workforce."

Central Scotland list MSP and Communities Minister Alex Neil has followed-up on Mr Swinney's visit as we went to press.

He added: "The Scottish Government, MSD, Scottish Enterprise and Scottish Development International will ensure no stone is left unturned in our quest for new jobs and industry to replace those which may be lost at MSD."
