Terence gets keys to barrier free home
A VIEWPARK wheelchair user has been given a new lease of life after gaining a home, which has been designed to be barrier free.
Terence Tochel recently took the keys to his new bungalow, which belongs to Clyde Valley Housing Association (CVHA), after being at the top of North Lanarkshire Council's housing list for some time.
Terence, who lived with his parents, seemed to be down in luck in securing a place of his own with most of the homes that did become available being deemed unsuitable because of their inappropriate layout and design.
The solution was for Terence to be nominated for a new build property with wider doorways, ramped access, light switches sited lower on walls and electrical sockets higher, enabling occupation by any person.
Happy to be in his own home, Terence said: "The biggest advantage is having independent living. I have the freedom to suit myself in my own space.
"My parents are happy for me and have peace of mind knowing I am in an environment that is both safe and comfortable."
Bill Dickie, Clyde Valley chairman, added: "In these times when there is a great demand for good, affordable, rented accommodation, it is gratifying to know that Terence has been provided with not only a good home, but a new way of life."
