Traders back changes to Bellshill traffic

BELLSHILL traders have backed the local area partnership's suggestion that the one-way traffic system on Main Street should be reversed.

Last week LAP chairman and Bellshill councillor Richard Lyle said that, after a year of assessing the situation, changes had to be made.

The partnership voted to raise the matter with North Lanarkshire Council at next month's meeting of the regeneration committee in the hope of reducing congestion and returning bus services to Main Street.

The traders this week claimed that without immediate changes businesses in Bellshill will disappear.

Fruit Grove owner Ronnie Murphy said: "We don't believe it will be a major job to change the flow of the traffic.

"All they have to do is turn around a few signs and street lights, but it would make such a big difference."

Councillor Lyle said changing the flow of traffic on Main Street is now official SNP policy.

He said: "We can't rip up the work that has been done, but having listened to the traders and residents we can try to find a solution to alleviate their concerns."
