Work underway to cut Bellshill accidents

WORK has started to close off the central reservation of a busy dual carriageway in Bellshill because of the high risk of accidents.

The crossover spaces at the dual carriageway in Motherwell Road are to be shut off to prevent vehicles coming out of side roads and going across the flow of traffic to the faraway carriageway.

Instead vehicles will have to merge into the flow of traffic and continue to one of two roundabouts at either end of the stretch of road affected.

The move has been backed by Councillor Richard Lyle, convener of the Bellshill Local Area Partnership.

He said: "It is unfortunate that these crossovers have to be closed but it is work which has to be done in the interests of safety.

"It is necessary because of the number of accidents we have had on this stretch and the substantial amount of traffic which now uses this road."

"The works are expected to last about 12 weeks."
