5. Tam Cowan
Broadcaster Tam Cowan was born in Motherwell and educated at Braidhurst High School - where he was one of the school captains. A lifelong fan of Motherwell FC - he's best known nowadays for hosting long-running comedy football show Off The Ball. Photo: John Devlin
6. The LaFontaines
The LaFontaines are an alt-rock band from Motherwell made up of Kerr Okan (vocals), Jamie Keenan (drums), and Darren McCaughey (guitar). They've been about for just over 15 years now, coming out in 2008 - and have saw huge success across the UK, often featuring on festival line-ups year after year.
7. Deborah Orr
Deborah Orr was a journalist from Motherwell who worked as a columnist for The Guardian, as well as posthumously publishing her memoir, Motherwell: A Girlhood - which recounts her upbringing living through post-industrialisation.
8. Keir Hardie
Born and raised in Stonehouse, a small village just outside of Motherwell, was Keir Hardie, founder of the Scottish Labour Party. His times in North Lanarkshire coal mines greatly inspired his work to create a party for the Scottish working class.
