TWO American footballers from Bellshill have been selected to go for gold at the sport's European Championships in Germany later this month.

Steven Wilson (25) and Robert Beveridge (23), who play for East Kilbride Pirates, are in the Great Britain Lions team for the big event.

Players in the 45-man national squad were chosen from nearly 20 British club teams and only eight Scots were called up.

Wilson, a gas service engineer with City Technical Services, said: "It means the world to me – nothing can beat the national anthem playing before a game when you know you're going to play for Britain.

Teammate Beveridge, a mechanical engineer with Rolls Royce, added: "Not everyone can say they have represented their country and I'm proud to say it. I'm after only one thing in Germany and that's gold!"

The team's first games are against France on July 27 and Sweden two days later.

They hope to make it through to the final on July 31 at the Commerzbank Arena in Frankfurt.
