TEN years after his retirement testimonial events will take place in September to honour former Motherwell striker Dougie Arnott.

A group of local fans have formed a testimonial committee, and with the full backing and support of Motherwell Football Club, have compiled a schedule of events that will pay tribute to the local lad turned Motherwell legend.

The testimonial pays tribute to the well known and well respected former player, who after making the step-up from junior football with Pollok, went on to have a glittering career with the Motherwell club.

His career at Fir Park spanned twelve years from 1986 to 1998 and saw him make 277 appearances and score 70 goals, including two goals that saw off Celtic in the 1991 Scottish Cup semi-final which set up that epic final win over Dundee United.

He was also a key player in Motherwell's rise to the runners up position in the Premier Division in season 1994/95, and as a result played three times for Motherwell in Europe including the two clashes with Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund.

Dougie never played for anyone else after retiring in 1998 and since then has been a successful publican in his home town of Carluke.

The events calendar will see an exclusive corporate golf day, involving celebrities and former players taking place on Wednesday, September 10 at Carluke Golf Club.

Dougie - The Hammer of the Old Firm - will then take to the field in a Motherwell select taking on a star-studded Old Firm select team at Fir Park Stadium on the evening of Thursday, September 11.

A gala dinner dance involving former players, celebrities and special guest appearances will be held at the Strathclyde Hilton Hotel in Bellshill on Friday, September 12.

Dougie said: "It means a lot to me even after a ten year gap since my career ended. I had never given up hope that it would take place despite the number of times things had faltered over the years.

"I understand things were held up when the club went into administration and I knew I had to wait but I was delighted to hear that a committee had been formed again and were working with the club to make things happen.

"I didn't get a chance to say farewell to the Well fans, I got a letter thanking me for my services and that was it, therefore this will be a chance to say hello again but also the opportunity to say farewell and thanks to the Well support."
