David's mental toughness takes him to Scottish title
BROTHERLY mind games have helped a young Motherwell javelin thrower become a Scottish champion.
David McCrum showed true grit under pressure to lift the national under-17 title with his final throw of the competition.
He then paid tribute to older brother Christopher who has helped him develop a winning mentality.
David, a member of Motherwell AC, has been throwing the javelin for five years and his improvement this season has earned him a place in the North Lanarkshire Development Squad.
Dad Bob is one of the coaches who have guided him and Christopher has also played a key role.
David (16) explained: "Christopher is studying sports psychology at Stirling University and he has got me more focused. It's probably because of him that I have knuckled down and done more work in training."
David won silver in the Scottish closed championships early in the season and gold in the Lanarkshire AAAs, but it was his performance in the main national event at Scotstoun last month which stands out.
He said: "I didn't do so well with my first five throws, but I pulled it out of the bag with my last effort which won me the gold. That was a great feeling."
Next season David will eb throwing at under-20 level and is already targeting the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
