Motherwell boxer Barry Morrison made a successful return to the ring on Monday after an absence of nearly 17 months.

Now his manager Tommy Gilmour has backed the former British light-welterweight champion to recapture his former glories.

Morrison (31) scored a convincing 40-36 points victory over Bellshill-based Maltese fighter Daniel Micallef at the St Andrew’s Sporting Club in Glasgow.

Gilmour said: “It was exactly what Barry needed against a fighter who had been in good form and had just picked up the boxer of the month award.

“You could see a bit of ring rust when he first started, which was to be expected, but even by round three he had started dropping that and performed well.”

Morrison, who hadn’t fought since missing out on the European title against Paul McCloskey in October 2010, is set to participate in Sky Sport’s Prizefighter tournament on February 11 in Wolverhampton.

The tournament is held over one night with the eventual winner taking on three different opponents over three, three-minute rounds.

Fellow Motherwell fighter Paul ‘Charlie’ King participated in the first Prizefight for light-welterweights back in 2009, but was defeated in the first round.

Gilmour said: “After the McCloskey loss Barry didn’t know what to do and had to take his time before deciding whether to continue.

“He had been to great heights in the past so when he called and asked if I could get him on the Prizefighter card I was only too happy to help him get back to the top again.

“As a former British champion, Barry will be among the favourites, but he’ll have to be careful and his first round bout will probably be the toughest.

“A lot depends on how Barry starts. If he gets going quickly then I have no doubt he’ll be better in the semi and final because he has a great engine.”

Meanwhile, Bellshill boxer Kris Hughes faced Carl Frampton for the Commonwealth super bantamweight title in London on Saturday.
