Golden start to the year for young rowers

ATHLETES at Strathclyde Park Rowing Club enjoyed a great start to the year, winning four gold medals at the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships.

The competition at Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh takes place on Concept 2 Rowing Machines over a set time for athletes under the age of 16 and a set distance of two kilometres for the seniors and older juniors.

Jeff Roche, the club’s Henley Stewards Charitable Trust coach, said: “It’s a great test of strength, endurance and fitness.”

The first athlete on the podium was 14-year-old Jan Meinicke who achieved 1,217 metres in four minutes and by halfway had taken a commanding lead in his race.

Next on the winner’s rostrum was Graham Ord, who won avery close race over two kilometres for the under-17 title in a personal best time of six minutes 47 seconds.

Next to compete was Pauline McGovern in the women’s under-19 competition, winning in a personal best time of seven minutes 28 seconds.

The final gold medallist was club captain Natalie Irvine and in her first year of senior rowing won the women’s open event in a personal best time of seven minutes 19 seconds

Club president and junior coach Ailie Ord said: “It’s very early in the season, but these results are a very encouraging indication of what is to come on the water.”
