Hughes title bid on hold an opponent's car crash
BELLSHILL fighter Kris Hughes's bid to become Commonwealth super bantamweight champion has been postponed after opponent Matthew Marsh was injured in a car crash.
The two had been due to meet in Sunderland tomorrow (Friday) for the vacant title, but Marsh suffered internal bruising, whiplash and back pains after the accident on the way to his London gym.
Marsh's manager and coach, Johnny Eames, said: "The doctors say that within the next few weeks he will be fine.
"Unfortunately, I had to make the decision to withdraw Matt from the fight, which will be rescheduled."
Despite the loss of an opponent Orbiston fighter Hughes, who has been training in Belfast with former world champion Paul Weir, will still have a fight in Sunderland.
His manager, Alex Morrison, said: "It's a real pity this has happened, Kris had many supporters travelling down for the fight so I am pleased that he will still be on the card although at this stage I don't know who his opponent will be."
The fight has been resheduled for Sepetmber 11.
