Junior sides facing Scottish Cup tests

JUNIOR sides Bellshill Athletic and Thorniewood United will enjoy a break from their league campaigns this Saturday when the second round of the Emirates Scottish Junior Cup takes place.

Both sides received byes in the first round of the competition and both were also given home ties in the second round draw.

Bellshill, whose defeat by Neilston on Saturday left them in sixth place in the Central First Division standings, will play Thornton Hibs, who are currently bottom of the East Region Central Division One table after losing five of their opening six games.

Last year Bellshill enjoyed a decent run in the competition when, following another first round bye, they beat Glenafton and Shotts Bon Accord before narrowly losing to powerful Bo’ness United in the fourth round.

Like Bellshill, Thornton also got a first round bye for the second season running. Last time out they lost 3-1 at home to Kilsyth Rangers in the second round.

Thorniewood will meet Aberdeenshire side Newmachar United and will be hopeful of progress again a team who only appeared in the junior ranks for the first time last season, finishing second in North Region Division 2. They are currently fourth in this season’s table.

The Viewpark side, 11th in the Super League Division 1 table following Saturday’s defeat by Kilsyth, have enjoyed some decent cup runs in recent years.

However, last year they fell at their first hurdle when they went down 3-2 at home to Lochee Harp in the second round. Newmachar were beaten 4-0 by Kilbirnie Ladeside in the first round.

Both Saturday’s games will kick-off at 2.30pm.
