Local stars secure places in Commonwealth Games team

SEVERAL local sportsmen and women have set their sights on medal glory after being picked for the Scotland team to compete in the Commonwealth Games later this year.

Bowlers Caroline Brown, from Holytown, and Margaret Letham, from Bothwell, Viewpark cyclist James McCallum and Bothwell badminton player Kirsty Gilmour are all among those included in the 191-strong Team Scotland for the 19th Games which will take place in Delhi, India, from October 3-14.

Motherwell boxer Iain Butcher has also won a place on the plane to Delhi and will be joined on the flight by another boxer Ross Henderson, born in Leeds but now a Cleland resident.

Bowlers Letham and Brown will team up for the pairs. Letham will be competing in her fourth Games - she won in 1998 - while Bellshill and Mossend Bowling Club player Brown has enjoyed a terrific season which recently saw her capture her first Scottish singles title.

The duo will be hoping to build on their success in winning bronze in a pre-Games competition in Delhi in April.

McCallum will compete in the track endurance and road race events and is also a medal winner from a previous Games, having taken bronze in the scratch race in Melbourne in 2006. He also competed in the 2002 Games in Manchester.

In the badminton, Kirsty Gilmour will take part in the ladies' singles, doubles and team competitions while boxers Butcher and Henderson will fight at 49kg and 91kgs respectively.

Butcher is part of the British development squad preparing for the London Olympics in 2012.
