Paul falls just short in bid to retain bowls crown
NEW Stevenston bowler Paul Simpson was foiled in his bid to win the Lanarkshire Masters singles title for the second year in a row.
The Wrangholm Hall BC member was the first winner of the new competition last year and this time he reached the semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Alex Kelly, of Eddlewood.
Those who made the eight section finals at Houldsworth BC in Wishaw on Friday evening included Simpson, who beat Iain McLean (Blackwood Victoria), and Chris Bryden (Bellshill and Mossend) who defeated Charlie Bence (Colville Park).
The action moved to Eddlewood BC in Hamilton the next day where Simpson edged out Bryden 21-20 in the quarter-finals before losing to Kelly.
Kelly went on to beat Eddlewood colleague Robert Brown in the final and lift the Masters Trophy, the coveted Masters Blazer and a cash prize.
