Pro Ross aims to hit heights

Ross Kellett has turned professional

Ross Kellett has turned professional

ROSS Kellett is aiming to follow in the footsteps of fellow Motherwell golfer Steven O’Hara and play on the prestigious European PGA Tour.

The 24-year-old revealed his ambition as he spoke about his decision to turn professional after a successful amateur career.

As he prepared to fly to Africa for his first tournament of the year, Kellett said the difficulties caused by the British weather had helped make up his mind to join the pro ranks.

The Colville Park Golf Club member earned the right to play on the Alps Tour this year in a qualifying tournament before Christmas. It’s a feeder circuit for the European Challenge Tour, itself one rung below the full European Tour.

O’Hara is now a regular on the main tour and has secured his place for the year ahead.

Although most of Kellett’s events will be in France, Italy, Spain and Austria, the first two tournaments of the season are in Morocco which is where he is playing this week.

Kellett said: “The top five in the Order of Merit at the end of the season qualify for the European Challenge Tour and that has to be my goal this year. The long term aim is to get on the European Tour.”

The highlight of his amateur career came in 2009 when he and Paul O’Hara - Steven’s brother - were in the Scottish team which won the European title.

Kellet has ‘no regrets’ about leaving the amateur ranks and believes he is ready for the new challenge.

He said: “I proved over the years at international level that I can compete and feel I am constantly getting better.

“It’s good to know there are players on the Alps Tour whom I have beaten. It’s a level I know I can compete at, but I’m also happy to learn in the year ahead.”
