Tennis ace Andrew set for Wimbledon date
A MOTHERWELL teenager who started playing tennis competitively just over a year ago is set to perform at Wimbledon.
Andrew Lobban (14) first picked up a racquet around three years ago and started taking part in competitions in March last year.
Now he has qualified in the under-14s category for next month's HSBC Road to Wimbledon contest, which gives juniors a chance to play at the world famous London courts.
Andrew is considered a late starter, but his coaches and family believe his technique, stamina and speed are improving rapidly, with the 6ft teenager firing serves at more than 100mph.
Andrew has won accolades at competitions up and down the country and is set to represent Lanarkshire at the 2011 International Children's Games.
His dad Ian said: "He is now ranked second in the west of Scotland and is breaking into the top 100 in the UK.
"Most people do not realise that he is competing against kids who have been playing tennis for years and he manages to stand his own."
