We'll run a club to make Archie proud
FORGEWOOD Amateur Boxing Club officials have pledged to continue the sterling work of founder and driving force Archie McKay who died last week.
They look certain to be joined at some stage by former British champion Barry Morrison who is keen to coach at the club where he learned his trade.
Peter McCormick, one of several trainers at the club, said Archie was a "father figure" to the youngsters he coached and will be missed greatly by the boxers and fellow coaches.
McCormick, a former boxer who has been coaching at the club for 20 years, reckons Archie's record of producing champions is unrivalled in Scotland.
He said: "From the likes of Barry Morrison and Commonwealth Games fighter Mark Hastie to the many British, Scottish and West District champions, the list is endless.
"The structure of the club is there and we'll carry on in the way Archie would have wanted. We also plan to have a member of his family on the committee soon."
Barry Morrison, who in 2007 became the first Scot to win the British light-welterweight title, praised the man who guided his career from the start.
He said: "Archie was a massive influence on my career and I want to be involved with Forgewood for as long as I can be. I want to keep the big man's legacy going."
The club will host a sell-out boxing show at Motherwell's United Services Club on Sunday, May 30, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
